DOT Physical Exam

How do I know if I need an authority?

An authority is generally required if you operate as a for-hire carrier and intend to operate in interstate commerce (crossing state lines) - while using vehicles with a GVWR/GCWR of 10,001lbs or more. However, many carriers who plan on using cargo vans under 10,001lbs often obtain a DOT Number & Authority to access load boards like DAT, Truckstop, etc. If you plan on operating as a broker or freight forwarder, an authority is always required. If you’re still unsure whether or not you need an authority, contact us for direct consultation.

What happens after I place my order?

We’ll get in touch with you shortly after we receive your order to gather some details about your operation including your company name, EIN, physical & mailing address, etc. Once we’ve obtained all the information required to proceed, we’ll submit your application and obtain your USDOT number immediately. Your authority will be generated the following day — we’ll provide it to you as soon as it’s been generated. All authorities are subject to a minimum 21-day waiting period before your MC number can be authorized. During this time, we’ll attach the BOC-3 and provide guidance on your insurance requirements. While you can operate intrastate-only before your authority is active, you must obtain an insurance policy and wait for the 21-day waiting period to end before your authority can be authorized and you can begin crossing state lines.

What’s next after receiving my DOT & Authority?

All interstate carriers are subject to a New Entrant Safety Audit. You’ll have a one-on-one consultation with one of our compliance experts to determine any applicable requirements for your specific type of operation. We provide a suite of products and services to help new companies get started as quickly as possible without being buried in paperwork. Whether you want to handle as much of them on your own as you can, or you want the experts to handle it for you, you’ll have all the information and resources you need to keep your operations running smoothly for decades to come.
