Who Needs a USDOT Number?
You need a USDOT number if you operate a commercial motor vehicle that is over 10,001 lbs gross weight or combined weight, designed to transport 9 or more passengers for hire or 16 or more passengers not for hire, or used to transport hazardous materials requiring a placard.
Most states have adopted these same rules for intrastate carriers. Even if you're not crossing state lines, you probably still need a DOT number.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there really no fee for a DOT number? The FMCSA does not charge a fee for a USDOT number by itself. And we don't charge you either. If you need an MC number (motor carrier operating authority), that has a $300 FMCSA filing fee.
What's the difference between a DOT number and an MC number? A USDOT number identifies your company for safety tracking purposes. An MC number is your operating authority to haul freight for hire across state lines. Not everyone needs both. Private carriers hauling their own goods typically only need a DOT number.
What else do I need after getting my DOT number? Depends on your operation. For-hire carriers also need an MC number, BOC-3, and insurance. Most motor carriers need driver qualification files. CDL operations need a drug and alcohol testing program. We'll walk you through what applies to you.
How long does it take to get a USDOT number? Your DOT number is issued immediately after we submit your application.
Do I need a DOT number if I’m not for-hire? If you’re using commercial vehicles as part of your business, yes. This applies to construction, landscaping, and many other private businesses.
