How do I know if I need an authority?

An authority is generally required if you operate as a for-hire carrier and intend to operate in interstate commerce (crossing state lines) - while using vehicles with a GVWR/GCWR of 10,001lbs or more. However, many carriers who plan on using cargo vans under 10,001lbs often obtain a DOT Number & Authority to access load boards like DAT, Truckstop, etc. If you plan on operating as a broker or freight forwarder, an authority is always required. What happens after I place my order?

We’ll get in touch with you shortly after we receive your order to gather some details about your operation including your company name, EIN, physical & mailing address, etc. Once we’ve obtained all the information required to proceed, we’ll submit your application and obtain your USDOT number immediately. Your authority will be generated the following day — we’ll provide it to you as soon as it’s been generated. All authorities are subject to a minimum 21-day waiting period before your MC number can be authorized. During this time, we’ll attach the BOC-3 and provide guidance on your insurance requirements. While you can operate intrastate-only before your authority is active, you must obtain an insurance policy and wait for the 21-day waiting period to end before your authority can be authorized and you can begin crossing state lines.

After your purchase, you’ll have a follow-up consultation with your assigned compliance expert to identify any State permits or requirements that were not covered with your package to ensure there are no gaps in compliance.
