Register for IRP (International Registration Plan) and get apportioned plates and your IRP cab card. IRP is required for qualified motor vehicles over 26,000 lbs, or with 3 or more axles, that travel interstate: one registration with your base state instead of separate plates in every state you run.

What Is IRP?

IRP (International Registration Plan) is a registration agreement among US states and Canadian provinces. Instead of registering your vehicle separately in every state you travel, you register once with your base state and receive apportioned plates. Your registration fees are divided among jurisdictions based on miles traveled in each.

It applies to qualified vehicles over 26,000 lbs or with three or more axles operating interstate. IRP filing through TIPS is not available in Florida, Pennsylvania, or North Carolina.

What Happens After I Order?

We set up your IRP account and file your application with your base state. Once it's approved, the state invoices you directly for plates and registration fees, which are calculated from your fleet and travel patterns. Your cab card lists every jurisdiction you're registered for, and it rides in the truck. Each year we can handle the renewal, including the updated mileage reporting the recalculation depends on.

What are apportioned plates?+

Apportioned plates are license plates that allow you to operate in all IRP jurisdictions without purchasing separate registration in each state. The cab card lists all jurisdictions where you are registered to operate.

How much do IRP plates cost?+

It depends on your vehicle weight, the jurisdictions you travel in, and the miles you report. Once your application is approved, you pay the state directly when they invoice you.

How long is IRP registration valid?+

IRP registration is annual. You renew each year with updated mileage information to recalculate fee distribution among jurisdictions.

Do I need IRP if I have IFTA?+

They are separate programs. IFTA handles fuel tax. IRP handles vehicle registration. Virtually all carriers who need one also need the other.

Do I need my 2290 before I can get plates?+

If your vehicle's taxable gross weight is 55,000 lbs or more, yes. States require the stamped Schedule 1 from your 2290 heavy vehicle use tax filing before they issue apportioned plates.

Is IRP included in your start-up packages?+

The CDL Hot-Shot and Semi-Truck start-up packages include IRP account registration. This standalone service is for renewals and for carriers who already have their authority.
