Frequently Asked Questions

What is reasonable suspicion testing? When a trained supervisor observes behavior, appearance, speech, or body odor that suggests drug or alcohol use, they may require the driver to take a reasonable suspicion test. The supervisor must document their observations.

Is this training required? Yes. 49 CFR 382.603 requires at least 60 minutes of drug training and 60 minutes of alcohol training for anyone making reasonable suspicion determinations.

How often do supervisors need to be trained? The regulation requires training before supervisors make determinations but does not require refresher training. Many carriers retrain every 2-3 years as a best practice.

Do owner-operators need this training? If you are an owner-operator and you have any employees who drive, the person supervising them needs to be trained. If you don’t have a dedicated supervisor, then you are the one who would complete this training.
