When is Your Biennial Update Due?

Your update is due every 24 months at most. The FMCSA uses the last two digits of your USDOT number to determine your filing month & year. Second-to-last digit determines if you file in even or odd years. The last digit determines the month.

Frequently Asked Questions

If the last two digits of my DOT number say I need to file this month, but it’s been less than 24 months since my last update, do I still need to file? Yes. You should ensure your updates are always filed during the month & year determined by your DOT number to maintain a consistent schedule and avoid deactivation.

What happens if I miss my biennial update? Your DOT number can be deactivated. You won't be able to operate legally until you file, and there is a potential fine of up to $1,000/day.

What if nothing has changed since last time? You still have to file. The FMCSA wants confirmation that your information is current.

How do I know when my update is due? Check the last two digits of your DOT number to determine when you need to file. Contact us if you’re not sure.

What's the difference between single and lifetime? Single update is one filing. Lifetime means we handle every biennial update for you going forward, automatically. You never have to think about it again.
