What Is a Certificate of Authority?

Your Certificate of Authority is the FMCSA's official proof that your MC or FF number is active. Most brokers, load boards, and factoring companies require a copy before they will work with you, which makes it one of the first documents a new carrier actually gets asked for.

The FMCSA mails the physical letter, and that can take up to 3 weeks to arrive. Every one of those days is a day you can't finish carrier packets. This service gets you a digital copy without the wait.

Anyone can write an MC number on a form. The certificate is the FMCSA's own document showing the authority is real and active, so brokers, shippers, and factoring companies use it to verify you before onboarding.

Is this the same as my operating authority?+

The authority is the legal grant itself; the certificate is the document that proves it. If you don't have authority yet, start with the DOT Number & Authority Package and add this so proof lands in your inbox the day you're granted.

What if my authority was revoked or is inactive?+

A certificate only exists for granted authority. If yours was revoked for an insurance or BOC-3 lapse, look at our Operating Authority Reinstatement service first, then the certificate once you're active again.
