New York HUT Permit

from $15.00

Register for New York's Highway Use Tax (HUT). Required for commercial vehicles over 18,000 lbs gross weight operating on New York highways, which sweeps in trucks that every other state program exempts, box trucks included.

Each vehicle needs its own HUT certificate of registration. The base filing covers your first truck, and additional vehicles are a small add-on each. Tax is calculated from New York miles and vehicle weight, filed quarterly on the same calendar as IFTA.

We register you with New York State and deliver your certificates, and our State Permit Quarterly Reports service can file the returns for you.

Who Needs NY HUT?

You need a HUT certificate if you operate in New York with a vehicle over 18,000 lbs gross weight. This includes trucks, tractors, and other commercial vehicles, including box trucks.

That 18,000 lbs threshold is lower than nearly every comparable state program, which is why carriers who are exempt everywhere else still owe New York.

What Happens After I Order?

We register you with New York State and deliver your HUT certificate for each vehicle. From there it's quarterly returns based on New York miles and vehicle weight, on the same calendar as IFTA. Our State Permit Quarterly Reports service can file them for you. Adding a vehicle later is a small add-on filing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the threshold 18,000 lbs?+

New York uses a lower threshold than most other states. While federal DOT rules kick in at 10,001 lbs and CDL rules at 26,001 lbs, New York HUT applies starting at 18,000 lbs.

When are quarterly reports due?+

Same schedule as IFTA: January 31, April 30, July 31, and October 31.

Do I need a certificate for each vehicle?+

Yes. Each vehicle operating in New York needs its own HUT certificate. The first is included in the base filing; additional vehicles are a small add-on each.

Is NY HUT separate from IFTA?+

Yes. IFTA covers fuel tax. New York HUT is a separate highway use tax based on miles and weight, with its own certificate and returns.

Can you file my quarterly reports?+

Yes. Add our State Permit Quarterly Reports service and we calculate and file your NY HUT returns every quarter.
