What We Need From You
Total miles traveled in each state or province (from your ELD, trip sheets, or fuel receipts) and total gallons of fuel purchased in each state or province (from receipts or fuel card reports). After your purchase and at the end of each quarter, we contact you to collect this information.
Reports are due January 31, April 30, July 31, and October 31, and a return is required even for a quarter with zero miles. IFTA filing through TIPS is not available in Florida, Pennsylvania, or North Carolina.
What Happens After I Order?
At the end of each quarter we reach out for your miles and fuel by jurisdiction, run the calculations, prepare the return, and file it with your base state. You get the amount owed (or the credit) with the filed copy for your records. Buy one quarter at a time, or all four for the year so no deadline depends on you remembering it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does IFTA work?+
Each quarter, you report miles traveled and fuel purchased in each jurisdiction. We calculate the difference between what you paid at the pump and what you owe each state based on miles traveled. Some quarters you owe money, others you may get a credit.
What if I owe taxes?+
You pay your base state, and they distribute funds to other jurisdictions. We tell you the amount owed when we file your report.
What if I have a credit?+
Credits carry forward to the next quarter. After multiple quarters of credit, you can request a refund from your base state.
Do I need to file if I did not travel?+
Yes. You must file every quarter even if the report shows zero miles and zero fuel. Missed filings lead to penalties and can jeopardize your IFTA license.
What records should I keep?+
Keep your fuel receipts and mileage records by jurisdiction. Your ELD or trip sheets cover the miles; receipts or fuel card statements cover the gallons. Those two numbers per state are everything a return is built from, and what an IFTA audit would ask for.
Do I need an IFTA account first?+
Yes. This service files returns for an existing account. If you're not registered yet, start with IFTA Account Registration and add quarterly filing from there.
